Back on the Top Step at Road America!

Spencer on the podium at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin

Hi Everyone,

This past weekend I went back to the top step of the podium at Road America in the Cooper Tires USF2000 National Championship Powered by Mazda. After a tough week at PitFit Training in Indianapolis I couldn't wait to get back in the car, especially at such a great track.

After the two practice sessions on Thursday I was second fastest but we knew we were much quicker than the time sheet showed. I was caught up in quite a bit of traffic and never got to put in a flyer, but there are no points for practice so it wasn't such a big deal. Qualifying on Friday morning went much better; I won my second pole position of the season by 0.007 seconds! Although it was so close we knew that we had a bigger advantage over second because I did not get a draft on my lap and with the extremely long straights at Road America the draft can be worth a lot of time.

I fell back to second at the start of the race, the front straight is so long the driver in third, Wayne Boyd, got a great draft and was able to get around me by turn 1. I tried to get the lead back but went a bit wide and then lost second place at turn 5. Since everyone was still so close together I couldn't get back on line before falling back to fourth position. I knew there was still a long way to go, I put my head down and concentrated on getting back to the front. I passed my teammate for third on the second lap. We had a pretty good battle and the leaders had pulled away but within a few laps I had caught and passed Petri Suvanto for second. By the halfway mark I was back in the lead setting fastest lap of the race in the process. I pulled away almost six seconds when I crossed the line. It felt great to get another win for Andretti Autosport!

Since I set the fastest lap of race 1 I started on pole again for the race on Saturday. Sitting on the grid before the race the clouds were getting very dark and I could tell rain wasn't far away. At the start Petri who started third got a great draft and got by me at the first corner. It didn't take me as long to get back into the lead this time, by turn six of the first lap I was back to P1. In the first few laps I had a pretty big lead over second but it started to rain. Being the leader on slicks in the wet is never the best place to be because you have no one ahead of you to judge the grip level. I braked a bit too late into turn 3 and went off but managed to come back on in 4th. Right after I came back on track they threw a full course yellow, everyone came into the pits for wets. When the race finally resumed we only had one lap before the checkered. I was able to make it back up to second position.

Overall it was a great weekend, I set a new track record, took two pole positions, one win, a second place finish and set fastest lap in both races. We were the fastest car all weekend and I was a bit disappointed not to win both races but it was a very strange second race. My next race is the final rounds of the championship on the streets of Baltimore September 2-4th.
