End the Season with a Win!

Spencer ended his USF2000 National Championship season on a high note with a win on the Streets of Baltimore

Hi Everyone,

This past weekend in Baltimore was the last stop of the Cooper Tires USF2000 National Championship Powered by Mazda and the last stop of my two-month road trip. Going into the weekend I knew we would be competitive based on our results at the first street circuit we did in St. Petersburg where we finished 1st and 2nd in the two races.

I arrived in Baltimore on Thursday and visited the John Hopkins Children Hospital in the morning. It was a very rewarding experience for me to be able to give something back to the community. We met lots of children and families that were all very excited to meet the drivers.

Our first on-track session was supposed to start at 8:00am Friday morning but the track was not finished so our session was delayed. By the time we got on the track they had cut our practice session to 15 minutes and canceled our qualifying. I did 5 laps in practice and really enjoyed the track and we were fast. I couldn’t wait for the race. The grid was set on points standings so I started in 2nd. Going into the first corner I had pulled along side of the leader but as I turned in and got to the apex I was hit from behind. It spun me into the outside wall along with eight other cars. Unfortunately a few of us were tangled together and by the time the corner workers set us free I had fallen four laps behind the leaders. This pretty much ended my race and championship hopes. Once I got going again I was the fastest car on the track and I set fastest lap of the race by over 0.3 seconds, which gave me pole position for race two.

With the disappointment of Saturday’s race I really wanted to end the season on a high. I got a great start and held the lead for the first few laps until a caution came out. After the restart I had pulled quite a good gap to Petri Suvanto in second place but yet again a full course caution came out. This time when it went green there was only one lap remaining but I was able to hang on for my third with of the season! It was great for the entire team to end the season with a win after all the hard work we’ve put in this year. We were incredibly strong at the end of the year; in the last four races I won twice, got three pole positions, three fastest laps and set two track records. That will be great momentum for the beginning of next season.

The city of Baltimore put on a great event with around 170,000 people attending over the three days. I was surprised at how many people come over to our trailer and wanted pictures with me and my autograph, it was pretty cool!

It has been a great rookie year for me in the USF2000 National Championship, winning three races, taking four pole positions, three fastest laps and setting two track records. Finishing second in the championship against guys much more experienced than me is a great result. The season officially ended at the banquet on Sunday night, it was a fun night that I was able to share with my family and sponsors that were able to attend.

In addition to the USF2000 races I was selected for the Team USA Scholarship for the second year in a row! I’ll be going to England at the beginning of October to compete in the last rounds of the British Formula Ford Championship at Silverstone and the British Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch. It’s a great honor to be selected for the second time. I’m only the third driver in the history of the Scholarship to be chosen twice!
