Three Wins Out of Four Races to Start the Season!

March 29, 2012

Hi Everyone,

The 2012 season in the Cooper Tires USF2000 National Championship Powered by Mazda has gotten off to a fantastic start. The first two rounds were at Sebring International Raceway during the American Le Mans Series opener and this past weekend we were in St. Petersburg for rounds three and four with the first IndyCar race!

Throughout practice at Sebring we were very fast, always near the top of the time sheets. There were over 30 cars entered for the race so traffic played a big part in getting a clear lap. Qualifying didn’t go as we had hoped and the results didn’t show our true pace. The session was full of stoppages due to people going off the track. We got three laps at the end of the session to challenge for pole but unfortunately I was held up in traffic on all of my laps leaving me with the 7th fastest time. Obviously I wasn’t too happy but I had to put it behind and concentrate on the upcoming race. In turn one on the first lap there was a pretty big pile up in front of me, initially I thought I was going to be able to pick up some positions but I had to avoid it, which allowed cars to pass me. I left the corner in 8th, but at least the car was still in one piece! The race was full of caution laps. After about three and a half green flag laps during the whole race I had moved up to third. I wanted to be higher but with all the caution laps I didn’t have a chance.

Race two started off much better, instead of 7th I started 2nd. I was running comfortably in second for most of the race until a late full course caution came out. I knew the restart was going to be my best chance to pass for the lead. I pulled to the outside entering turn one and kept my foot down until I saw my teammate, Matt Brabham lift. I got by on the outside and kept the lead to take the win!

A few days after getting back from Sebring I was off again to St. Pete. I topped every practice session, qualified on pole position and led every lap to win both races; it really was a perfect weekend! It wasn’t easy though; the races were hard fought though between Matt and I. The team and I both had a lot of sponsors, family and friends there so it was a great experience to celebrate with them!

Our next race isn’t until the end of May at the Night Before the 500 event at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis. I’m leading the championship by two points so hopefully I will be able to stretch it out when we get there!
