Win at Mid-Ohio!

August 9, 2012

Hi Everyone,

It's been a while since the Cooper Tires USF2000 National Championship Powered by Mazda had a race (Indianapolis in May) but this past weekend we were finally back out on track at Mid-Ohio. It's one of my favorite tracks and we were fastest in the series test earlier in the year so I couldn't wait to get there.

The week started off really well, I was fastest in three of the four practice sessions. The first race of the weekend was on Saturday afternoon just after the IndyCar qualifying. I started the race from pole position and went on to lead every lap to take the win. It was a pretty difficult race, I had built up a pretty big lead until a full course yellow came out and I had to do it all over again. The track had a lot of rubber laid down from all the other series; it was also extremely hot so it made for the most physical race of the year. I set the fastest lap of the race, which meant I qualified on pole position for the second race on Sunday.

The race on Sunday was a strange one. It had been raining very heavily in the morning that forced some small delays in the schedule. By the time we were ready to race the track had almost dried but everyone had to start on wet tires. To add another tricky condition into the mix, a car in the previous race blew an engine and put fluids down on almost the entire track. So we were driving on a dry track that had oil dry down everywhere on wet tires, not exactly ideal! I was fighting for the lead in the first few corners with my teammate, Matt. I went a bit wide on the oil dry and fell back to third. A couple of laps later I passed for second but going into the next corner I got hit from behind, went off track and was stuck in the gravel. I got back going again but I lost a lap and ended up finishing 23rd.

The end to the weekend wasn't what I wanted but overall it wasn't as bad as it could have been. I won my fifth race of the season and extended my lead in the championship from 6 to 18 points. Our next race is at Road America, August 17th-18th.
