Pigot 4th in Debut Oval Race

June 6, 2011

Spencer Pigot finished an impressive 4th place in his first ever oval race in round five of the Cooper Tires Presents the USF2000 National Championship Powered by Mazda during the 'Night Before the 500' event at the 5/8th mile Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The 17-year old MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development driver from Windermere, Florida quickly adapted to driving on ovals in the series tests at the circuit earlier in the month and was very confident of a strong result in the race. "I?m really looking forward to the race this weekend at LOR," stated Pigot. "Racing at the 'Night Before the 500' event and my first oval will be quite an experience. I think the MAZDASPEED/Skip Barber car will be strong after learning a lot from the tests."

Pigot was straight up to speed recording very competitive lap times in the sole three-hour practice session on Friday. The two short practice sessions leading up to qualifying on Saturday morning found the Andretti Autosport driver looking for answers after struggling to find a good set-up for the car. Qualifying was more of the same, Spencer was suffering from a car with very little grip and was only able to post fifth fastest time. After hours of looking over data and talking with the engineers on how to fix the problem they decided on a set-up for the race.

The fifth starting position didn?t hold Spencer back as he charged from 5th to 2nd on the first lap in a bold overtaking maneuver around the outside of turn one. Pigot was running comfortably in third position in the early laps of the race until hitting lap traffic at the wrong time and falling back to fifth position. The talented up-and-coming driver kept pushing throughout the 70-lap rain delayed event and finished in fourth. "Overall it was a pretty good result," said Pigot. "We made some big improvements to the car from qualifying so I have to thank all of the guys at Andretti Autosport for that, but we didn?t have that last tenth to challenge for the win. We will be working hard over the break and will be stronger in Milwaukee."

Pigot remains in second position in the championship standings after five of twelve rounds with one win, one pole and three podium finishes. He will return to the cockpit at the world famous Milwaukee Mile June 18th.
