Difficult Weekend For Pigot in Milwaukee

July 15, 2011

Andretti Autosport driver Spencer Pigot finished 6th after a difficult race at the Milwaukee Mile in round 6 of the Cooper Tires Presents USF2000 National Championship Powered by Mazda.

The 2010 Skip Barber National Champion quickly got up to speed around the one mile oval as he posted times comfortably inside the top five in the practice sessions leading up to qualifying despite not being happy with balance of the car. "We struggled to find a good set up today, the car is very unpredictable so we have some work to do in preparation for qualifying," said the MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development Driver. In the single car qualifying session Pigot's two-lap average was good enough to put him on the outside of row two in fourth position.

Pigot once again made an impressive start by passing around the outside to move up to third spot. In the early stages of the 55-lap race the 17 year old Floridian was running third with no pressure from behind. About half way through the race lap traffic started to come into play. Hitting traffic at the wrong time ruined Pigot's momentum and he was left helpless in defending 3rd position. The USF2000 rookie fell back to 6th position within a few laps. "It's disappointing to leave here with a 6th place finish," Pigot said, "I went to pass a back marker on the entrance to turn three and I guess he didn't see me and I didn't have enough room to get through on the inside. I had to slow up a lot and that ruined my momentum and made it easy for the pack behind to get by me."

At the halfway mark of the season Pigot is third in the championship standings, one point from second, with one win, one pole position, and three podium finishes. The next round of the series is at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course August 5-6th.
