Pigot Rebounds from Controversial Penalty to Claim Second at Road America

August 20, 2012

The first-ever triple-header race meeting for the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda did not run according to plan for points leader Spencer Pigot. The weekend at Elkhart Lake's Road America circuit in rural Wisconsin started out well enough, with the 18-year-old prodigy from Orlando, Fla., posting the fastest time in the opening practice session. It also included a pair of hard-earned podium finishes and a fastest race lap but was overshadowed by a controversial penalty in the opening race which severely impacting his title aspirations.

Pigot arrived in Wisconsin with high hopes of adding to his championship lead and began as he intended to continue by setting a torrid pace in the opening, wet, practice session, more than a second clear of the field in his #2 Team Pelfrey/Doug Mockett & Company/E-merging Technologies/Parathyroid.com/California Scents/Mazda/Cooper Tires Van Diemen-Mazda entered by Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing. Qualifying didn't go entirely to plan but he still posted a time good enough for the outside of the front row of the grid for the opening race of the weekend, merely 0.035s adrift of the polesitter.

Race One, on Friday morning, Round 8 on the season, began with a fraught battle among the top three title contenders. Pigot led for five laps in the middle of the race but, after slipping to second, was assessed a penalty for alleged "blocking" which even many of his closest rivals thought was harsh. The decision robbed him of a seemingly secure second-place finish and left him a disappointed and disgruntled 16th.

The decision relegated him to second in the championship points table but left him even more determined to bounce back. Round 9, later on Friday afternoon, saw him once again embroiled in a battle for the lead, but his car wasn't working entirely to his satisfaction and he wound up having to settle for third - his eighth visit to the podium this season.

Headline Photo After some more work on the car, Pigot leapt into the lead of Saturday morning's Round 10, and even though he had to be content with second, he picked up the bonus point for setting fastest lap of the race and made up some valuable ground on his primary championship rival.

"The weekend definitely wasn't what we were hoping for coming in," recounted Pigot. "The first race was ruined after a harsh penalty while I was running second. We struggled a little to find the right balance in the two races on Friday but worked really hard to get everything right for Saturday. It paid off and I was able to finish second with fastest lap of the race. I think we could have challenged for the lead if I didn't get caught up in lapped traffic toward the end. Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing was great as always. We have our work cut out for us now but we will be back strong at Baltimore."

The championship will resume on September 1/2 with two 30-minute races around the challenging Inner Harbor Street Circuit in downtown Baltimore, Md., where USF2000 will run in support of both the IZOD IndyCar Series and the American Le Mans Series.
