Busy Month for Pigot Includes Pro Mazda Podium and Porsche GT3 Cup Win

MAY 28, 2013

The Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires had a two-month hiatus between the pair of races in St. Petersburg, Fla., and last Saturday night's oval feature at Lucas Oil Raceway Indianapolis, but rising star Spencer Pigot has been busier than ever, taking the opportunity to drive - and impress - in a variety of race cars.

The 19-year-old from Orlando, Fla., firstly enjoyed productive tests at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, where he posted the fastest time, and Lucas Oil Raceway in the No. 81 Team Pelfrey/Doug Mockett & Company/Gap Guard/Parathyroid.com/California Scents/OMP Pro Mazda entry, culminating in a solid second-place finish on the challenging 0.686-mile oval in the traditional Visit Hendricks County "Night Before the 500" (left). He also qualified on the front row and led the early stages of a European F3 Open Championship race at Circuit Paul Ricard in southern France last month and now leads the Ultra 94 GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Michelin by virtue of a sensational debut pole and win followed by a second-place finish in the opening rounds at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park as part of the Victoria Day Speedfest on May 18-19.

"It's been a busy month for me," said Pigot. "I've been racing different cars in different countries almost every weekend. It started in France where I did my first race in a Formula 3 car (right). It was a great experience and I was able to start on the front row and finish in the top five with Team West-Tec. Between the Pro Mazda testing and race in Indy I was in Canada for the Porsche GT3 Cup championship. It's a very different car to what I'm used to but I learned a lot. I finished first and second in the two races with Alegra Motorsports (left) which puts me in the lead of the championship."

One week later, Pigot was back behind the wheel of his Team Pelfrey Pro Mazda car at Lucas Oil Raceway. The team continued to make progress with the car's setup which allowed him to qualify second behind series leader Matthew Brabham. After a delay of over two hours due to a persistent light rain, Pigot was able to maintain that position in the race.

"It was a bit of a strange race with such a long rain delay but it was good to be back on the podium," he said. "Throughout the weekend we continued to improve the car. The guys at Team Pelfrey worked very hard and gave me a great car for qualifying and the race. We scored some good points but we all want to finish one spot higher so we'll be ready to fight hard at Milwaukee in a few weeks."

Pigot and Team Pelfrey will return to action for Round 6 of the Pro Mazda Championship, his primary focus this year, in support of the IZOD IndyCar Series at the Milwaukee Mile on Friday, June 14. In the meantime Pigot will contest another pair of GT3 Porsche races on June 7-9 prior to the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal.
