Spencer Pigot Claims Well-Deserved First Pro Mazda Victory

July 23, 2013

After what can only be described as a challenging opening half of this year's Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires, 19-year-old rising American star Spencer Pigot sprung to prominence on Saturday at the dauntingly fast Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, Ont., Canada by claiming a long overdue maiden victory.

Pigot had endured a particularly disappointing Allied Building Products Grand Prix of Toronto the previous weekend, placing ninth and 11th on the 1.755-mile temporary street circuit. Matters weren't looking much brighter when he struggled to find a good balance on his No. 81 Team Pelfrey/Doug Mockett & Company/Gap Guard/Parathyroid.com /California Scents/OMP Pro Mazda during the initial practice sessions at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, just an hour or so northwest of Toronto, last Thursday and Friday.

Chief engineer Darrell Soppe made some changes to the car setup in time for official qualifying on Saturday morning, which was held in damp but rapidly drying conditions following heavy overnight rain. Pigot responded by jumping to the top of the timing charts until being demoted to second place - by just 0.081s - moments before the red flags flew for an incident in Turn Three. Time expired before the session could be restarted, but Pigot was relatively content with second place on the starting grid.

The youngster from Orlando, Fla., surged into the lead with a fine pass on Lap Two and was beginning to edge clear when the caution flags flew once more. After a lengthy cleanup, Pigot maintained his lead and was embroiled in a thrilling three-way tussle before finally triumphing by just over one tenth of a second.

"It was a big team effort," said Pigot. "We have been working hard all year and haven't quite had it for some of the other teams, especially at Toronto which was probably the worst weekend I have ever had. To come back and get the win is fantastic for the whole team. I made a little mistake on the last lap and Shelby [Blackstock] and I were side-by-side. In fact, I think he was a little bit ahead of me on the back straightaway and I was just able to hold the inside through Turn Eight. It was awesome racing."

Pigot started Sunday's 11th round of the championship from the pole, by virtue of posting the fastest race lap on Saturday, and while he led more than half of the race distance, increasing oversteer saw him struggling to maintain his advantage. He eventually slipped to fourth at the checkered flag.

"The car was sliding around a lot," he reported. "It's so close up at the front that when the car isn't just right, it's hard to keep the lead and I fell back to fourth, but overall it was a good weekend."

Pigot and Team Pelfrey will be back in action for Rounds 11 and 12 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, in support of the IZOD IndyCar Series, on August 2-4.
